Webi 4.0 Introduction

Webi is a reporting tool used extensively now to report on data coming from BW or directly reporting on HANA/ECC data.

Webi is not restricted to BI developers and can be used by business user to format and analyze data in a suitable way.

SAP acquired Business Objects tool in 2008 and renamed it as BO XI 3.1

At the end of 2011, BO XI 4.0 version was released.

These notes will discuss about versions 3.1 and 4.0 as there are lot of migration projects going on from 3.1 and 4.0 and around 70% of the business users are still using 3.1 version.

Component wise BO Architecture

Repository and database

Once you install BO in your machine, it will create a repository. This repository is sitting on a database. It can be oracle, sap bw, CSV file or XML which will act as source of data or a data warehouse.

All the universe, table structure, Bex queries structure etc. will be stored in the repository.

CCM stands for ‘Central Configuration Manager’. This is a tool where you can start/stop server, configure an new server etc.

CMC stands for ‘Central Management Console’. This is used to maintain all the business objects components, security part like assigning roles to users, restricting access, creating new users, giving access etc.

Both the tools CCM and CMC comes under the ‘Administration’ part of BO training. You will find separate job profiles for BO administration in the market.

BI Launch Pad

Coming to the implementation part, we have Webi as the reporting tool to create and manage reports and dashboards.

You can access Webi using the BI Launch Pad. BI Launch Pad is a BO portal through which the end user can connect to the reports and view them. They can create the reports in BI Launch Pad and also they can access various folders.\

BI Launch Pad communicates with the repository through the web application server.

BI Launch Pad can be opened via Internet Explorer. It is a web based tool.

In 3.1 version, BI Launch Pad is known as ‘Infoview’.

You can start creating/viewing reports in Webi if you have access to the BI Launch Pad url without installing anything in your local machine.

While creating reports in Webi, you need to connect to a universe. Universe is a semantic layer between the database and the end users.

Universe can be created  using the UDT tool / IDT tool.

UDT – Universe Designer Tool

IDT – Information Designer Tool

UDT is an older tool available in 3.1 version.

IDT is new tool which is introduced in 4.0.

You can create the universe on any kind of database like Oracle, MS Server, SAP BW, HANA etc.

In IDT, one universe can connect to multiple kind of databases and multiple databases.

In UDT, which is the older version, you can connect a universe to only a single database.

Bex queries as source

You can create webi reports by using BEx queries as source.  This feature is not available in 3.1 version.

You have to create the universe first on top of Bex query and then create Webi reports in 3.1 version. But in 4.0, you can directly create webi reports from Bex queries.

IDT can connect to the Bex queries, SAP ECC system, or the BW system infoproviders like cubes, multiproviders and DSOs. In UDT, this is not possible. You need to create a universe first in UDT.

Webi Rich Client

Webi rich client is a desktop tool to create the webi reports. There are minor differences between the desktop tool and the web based tool which you can go through in the sap help documents notes included in the later post of this category.

Crystal Reports

Crystal was acquired by business objects in 2003. SAP released the latest version as Crystal Reports 2011. Crystal reports are accessible through BI Launch Pad. You can built them on top of universes or any datasource like ECC, Bex, BW targets, excel files etc.

Xcelsius 2011 (Dashboard 4.0)

You cannot create reports directly in Xcelsius. There are middle layers in order to connect to the source:

  • QAAWS (Query as a web service) [Can connect to the Universes]
  • Live Office [This can connect to Webi reports, Crystal reports and universes to generate the dashboard]

Lifecycle Management Tool. This is used to release the project from Development to QA and QA to Production

Upgrade Management Tool

This is used for migration of the system to latest version.
